For years I use Firefox portable. Current version Quantum 67.0 (64-bit). For 2 weeks now, if I start Firefox everything works fine, but if I click on a link in an e-mail, a new Firefox WINDOW opens with the same version, but without the add-ons and different Options (about:preferences). Before this problem, a new TAB opened in the already open Firefox window with all add-ons. I didn’t find a fix (a new install and new default browser stetting) didn’t help.

Thank you both, FredMcD and jscher2000! The portableapps link was the solution. I’ve used the tool registerfp_1_1.zip to register Firefox portable. Work like a charm.

Sounds like you have two versions of Firefox; normal and portable. When a link call for a web browser, the computer checks its settings and calls the default browser.

Hi itsmelost, that is a separate product with a unique configuration, and it was not intended to act as the default browser on a system.

Firefox 67 has a new behavior for external links: instead of looking for whatever profile is open in firefox.exe, it prefers your default profile. Usually Firefox Portable doesn't update the file that Firefox uses to store its default profile because it is completely independent.

For a workaround, you can change your default browser to Portable Firefox. check out this thread over on the PortableApps forums:
