I use Mail Washer to preview my email, then click "Clean Mail" which opens Thunderbird, where I click "Get Mail". Yesterday I started getting 2 similar messages each time I try to bring mail in: "Connection to server.pop.gmail.com was interrupted./reset. My mail is evident in Mail Washer, and accessing GMail thru a browser or tablet. It would seem that the problem is with Thunderbird, all that I have found in help files does not address this problem; safe mode does not help.

In Pop account server settings, is the option to 'Leave messages on server' selected?

In gmail webmail account accessed via a browser, have you selected the option to use 'less secure apps' ? If no, then you need to select it.
