Can you still not open an ICS attachment in Thunderbird/Lightning?

I'm trying to open .ics attachments received in e-mail and have them create calendar events. The last items I can find on this topic suggest that you can't do that at all with Thunderbird/Lightning but those references are years old. Can you still not do this at all or is there a way to make these attachments work as expected?

there is a user interface displayed for things like invites. So you're not opening them as such but updating your calendar with the information.
