The "Open a new tab" icon used to appear as an option during customize (see attachment). Now there is only a "New window" icon. --- Yes, I know there is a "+" icon on the right edge of the tabs (not as handy).

Quite frankly : I don't remember ever seeing an "open new tab" icon other that the "plus sign", and I don't know why one would even want another icon .... (?)

But I did some searching, and found this add-on :
