I want it so that when I startup firefox the first page is the Firefox New Tab page (is it called about:home?), and when i press the home button it takes me to google. All websites I've visited have lumped together the startup page and home page, which isn't what I'm looking for....

The default new tab page is about:newtab and the default home page is about:home. You can see this in "Tools -> Page Info -> General". Both look the same "Firefox Home" page, so do not get confused.

You can force a specific startup page by specifying the URL in the target line of the Firefox desktop shortcut.

There is also the browser.startup.page pref available on the about:config page.
