Hello, I can't think of the best way to word this, but I want to make sure that certain bookmarks on my bookmarks tool are not moved or replaced by newer bookmarks that I add to it. Make sense? Thank you!

If you keep adding bookmarks to the Bookmarks Toolbar then at some point bookmarks can be moved to the overflow area (>>). You can organize bookmarks in folders if you want to access more bookmarks via the Bookmarks Toolbar instead of via the Bookmarks Menu. There is no way to protect/lock bookmarks to prevent them from getting moved to the overflow area apart from dragging a new bookmark to a position where it doesn't affect existing bookmarks.

New bookmarks are normally create in the Other Bookmarks folder and you would have to move them to the Bookmarks Toolbar folder via "Edit This Bookmark" or via other ways.

In what cases that you use to create a new bookmark can it happen that you lose a bookmark ?

Thank you cor-el! I believe that normally I save pages either to the bookmarks menu or to a separate folder I created. Last week I started NOT to save any pages to the toolbar and thought that would do the trick, but this morning a bunch of old pages popped back on there. Also the new bookmarks I 'd added were not there and the order was also not saved.

What you describe could indicate a problem with the places.sqlite database.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

  • Actually the bookmarks I wanted to show in the toolbar were in the overflow, as you mentioned, and I did have to click and drag back to where I wanted them. I'm thinking of deleting all of the other bookmarks that are on my toolbar to see if I can prevent this type of thing from happening.

You're welcome

Were you able to fix the issues with places.sqlite ?

I'm not signed into Sync but can't find the Firefox profile folder.

I got it. It looks like places and sqlite are "sane." I don't see anything that says error.
