New Tab page has settings icon in upper right hand corner, instead of my Gmail icon. How to get that back?

It sounds like you have your homepage set to Google. You cannot set your new tab page to Google. You only have the option between a blank page and the Firefox homepage (which is what you are using now).

However, you can use an add-on like New Tab Override to set the new tab page to Google.

Hope this helps.
