Changing SMTP outbound setting in Thunderbird

Last week 2 email addresses ("tiger" and "ehs") stopped working completely. Days of trying later, I finally got ehs to work by changing the password to a recently acquired (while online to ATT) Secure Mail Key. I changed by going from main screen showing all email accounts to:

Options/privacy and security/passwords/show passwords/edit password.

After hours of work, that did the trick! For ehs. But it didn't work with tiger. I noticed that while ehs and tiger had the same mailbox (inbound.att.net), they had different smtp settings:

ehs: outbound.att.net tiger: pop.att.yahoo.com

I could not edit tiger's settings! I tried removing tiger's settings, thinking it would give the the option of putting in the correct (ehs) settings. But I can't do it. How can I re-add tiger settings in the Saved Logins (where passwords are shown) to make them the same as ehs email, which now works fine?

Much obliged for anyone who can solve this stickler!

Options/privacy and security/passwords/show passwords The 'Saved Logins' screen allows you to 'Edit' the 'user name' and the 'password' of a saved password or delete/remove the saved login entirely. You do not edit the server settings in this location.

Server Settings are edit in the 'Account Settings'

  • Right click on mail account name folder in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'

This opens the 'Accounts Settings' window. You say you had an issue 'sending', so that would be the 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)'. The one you are using will be shown bottom right.

  • Click on 'Edit SMTP Server..' button
  • You can change the server name etc.
  • click on OK.

The inbound server settings will under the 'Server Settings' for the 'tiger' account. But I would leave that alone assuming actual server settings are ok with incoming. Note Password is not set here, but you can select Authentication Method: 'Normal Pasword'

Click on OK to save and close the Account Settings window. Restart Thunderbird.

When Thunderbird attempts to access the server, you will get a prompt to enter password. There will be space for entering password and a checkbox which you need to select. Enter the correct password for that account. To allow thunderbird to save it, you need to select the checkbox : Use Password Manager to remember this password'. This is how the information gets put back into the 'Saved Logins'. Click on OK
