I downloaded the new thunderbird and cannot find where to place a permanent security exemption as Thunderbird does not recognize my email providers certificate (even though I have checked and it is valid). So we cannot get mail yet.

is the certificate one that would fail a validation for being current? If so try turning of the OCSP checking in Options > Privacy and Security in V78
