missing inbox folders and sent messages

I am able to see the messages in the top level of my Inbox folder. I am also able to see the sub- and sub-sub-folders, but not their contents. When I click on a sub- or sub-sub-folder, nothing happens on Thunderbird and I get a Ubuntu notification on my screen that says something like

      The current operation on 'XXXX' did not succeed.  The mail server for account YYYY responded 
       [NONEXISTENT]: Unknown mailbox: imap.gmail.com/INBOX/2019 (Failure).

In addition, only the most recent message I sent appears in the Sent folder.

I know that this stuff is not gone forever because I am able to see it on a different device, using a different client.

How can I fix this?

Having sub folder of inbox does not sound consistent with the gmail labels. unless they allow labels like "inbox\2019" do these labels appear when you log into Gmail using your browser?

I'm not sure I can answer your question. I'll try to give you some context. I hope it is relevant.

This problem is not occurring on my gmail account. I am using an account that was set up for me by people using the gmail system. (Evidently google provides a service in which you can create a domain with a name like example.com using google's gmail machinery.)

I set things up with no problem on Thunderbird on one ubuntu machine. But I had a lot of trouble with my other machine. (For example, when I installed my gmail account and the other one, both accounts had identical folders and mail -- my gmail account mail.)

Eventually I uninstalled Thunderbird from that machine. When I reinstalled Thunderbird, I only set up the other account. Everything looked fine, but then I shut the machine down for the night. When I turned it back on and ran Thunderbird, I had the problem I described in my first message.
