These are very large black "boxes" that also cause gmail to flick in and out from a large to a small display

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Close and restart Firefox after modifying the setting for changes to take effect.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Apps affected include Firefox, Freelancer, Gmailand, Wordpress... Pretty much every program i use.

I can't take a screen shot because the L shaped "box" disappears when i click on the screenshot app.

It is happening while i type this!

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?
