As a workaround, just go into preferences, type appl in the search box and in the content type box that is shown for file type locate PDF and change the action from preview in Thunderbird to use other and set it to your preferred PDF viewer.

I have never actually been able to get the PDF viewer in Firefox to function without issues and the Thunderbird one is the same thing, just copied.

There is a bug report https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1175168 but it does not have a history of being related to PDF issues.

@Darryl, can you send one of these emails to us for testing?
