I had an account in Thunderbird for years, and was advised by the provider to delete the account and re-add it in Thunderbird. I have deleted it, and now find that I am unable to re-add it; I keep getting the message that the password cannot be verified that probably the userid or password is wrong. However, I am perfectly well to login to that account with the password (and userid) that Thunderbird says are probably incorrect. In addition to this, I have obtained a new email account to use with some new stuff that I am doing, and Thunderbird does not want to add it either! Gives me the same messages - sniffle, sob, weep! And I love Thunderbird and don't want to start having to log into all my email accounts individually.... Help!

Chosen solution

The Verizon account requires an app password, unless you use AOL servers and OAuth2 authentication.

See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1361878

Proton requires the paid-for Bridge to access the account in TB.

Who is the mail provider? This looks like the advice given to AOL or Verizon users.

Yes, of course, AOL took over the Verizon email management. However, the new account which I want to add is not an AOL account.

Many servers have updated password authentication stuff. Are you talking about an imap mail account?

Some can now use Authentication Method = OAuth2 - in which case you do not need to set up 2 step nor generate app password, but you do need to allow cookies in Thunderbird.

Others, if using Authentication Method = Normal Password have to set up 2 step authentication and generate an application password which you use instead of the normal password.

But since you have not told us what server you are talking about, it's difficult to advise further. Who is provider? Is it for a verizon email address ? What are the server settings you are trying to use? eg: Server name, port, connection security, authentication method.

As I stated "AOL took over the Verizon email", the account which I deleted and cannot re-add is a verizon.net account. The other account is a protonmail account. I do have Thunderbird accept cookies, but not third party cookies. I accept the settings Thunderbird offers for these accounts:

  Incoming
  POP3pop.verizon.netSSL/TLS
  Outgoing
  SMTPsmtp.verizon.netSSL/TLS

The error messages say "unable to login at server. Probably wrong configuration configuration, username or password"
