My laptop crashed and its maker has returned it empty of everything. I'm trying to get back to where I was on Thunderbird. On the account setup page I can't get past "Checking password" and the screen seems to have frozen. How do I proceed, please?

As you have just installed Thunderbird, maybe Thunderbird cannot access server because something is blocking Thunderbird program from the internet.

Exit Thunderbird now. Access the 'Firewall' - this might be the default Firewall provided by the OS (Operating System eg: Windows) OR it might be controlled by an Anti-Virus program you installed. Thunderbird must be set up as an allowed program.

AS an example: I use Norton 360 See image below: you can see that I have set up Thunderbird as an allowed program. I also have Thunderbird software Updater allowed as well.
