I get an error message when I try to send an email stating that thunderbird cannot connect with the SMTP server, I have checked that the settings are correct they are to the best of my knowledge. Are you able to confirm port settings or do I have to ask my email provider (Plusnet)? I am using Windows 10. The only recent addition I have installed was Norton antivirus.

No experts on all servers here; we just look up host website for settings. I see plusnet uses relay.plus.net 587 for sending and imap.plus.net with 993 (or pop.plus.net with 995). If all was well before Norton, then Norton is causing the problem. This is not unusual and not a criticism of Norton. I suggest you explore Norton's settings to see where to tell it to leave email alone. Antivirus interference is a common cause of email problems.
