Thunderbird Talktalk issue
I have received an email from Talktalk explaining that they will be making changes to the system in October and giving different email app settings. I use Thunderbird and I made what I think are the recommended changes including changing the incoming mail settings to mail.talktalk.net. I have tried to verify the changes and use Thunderbird but I now find that I can get no further as I am asked to 'Enter your password for 'aparr17@talk.net' on 'mailtalktalk.net' I am subsequently advised that 'Log in to servermail.talktalk.net with user name aparr17 @talktalk.net' failed and asked to enter a new password. Needless to say I can get no further and as I would like to continue to use Thunderbird after Talktalk have made the changes can you advise me how to get further forward with Thunderbird and the changed settings.

I am not clear if I am using the right Password for POP, IMAP and smtp as you said in the last para about the settings.
There is only one password. That password is set up/modified etc in your TalkTalk account. You do not create or modify passwords. When you logon directly to the TalkTalk account, you do it via a browser like Firefox or Edge or Chrome. You are using the TalkTalk website. This link asks for email address and password to access your mail. https://apps.talktalk.co.uk/appsuite/ You use the password and email address to logon to that TalkTalk account and this is called the Webmail account.
Thunderbird has to access the same server to see emails, but it does not use the above webmail. It uses network protocols to get direct access. That is the server settings you use in Thunderbird either IMAP or POP to download emails and it uses SMTP to send emails. However, it does use the same email address and password which you use to access the webmail account.
So, whatever password you use to access the webmail account is the same password you use in Thunderbird.
Thunderbird can save the password so it does not have to ask you each time. That saved password can be edited if you have changed it.
However, I was under the impression you already had a TalkTalk email address/ mail account set up in Thunderbird and you had already been downloading emails and using Thunderbird to read emails. So you already had a password set up and your mail account was working perfectly ok.
re: I have received an email from Talktalk explaining that they will be making changes to the system in October and giving different email app settings.
I'm not sure what TalkTalk wanted you to do because you have not posted the exact information which TalkTalk sent to you. It would be useful if you could post whatever information they sent to you.
I do not know what server setting you had originally - you did not post any images showing your original setup. You did not say whether you were setup to use a POP account or an IMAP account, so I posted both sets of information.
Just because you get an error saying password is wrong, it does not necessarilly mean the password itself is wrong. It might be the password is ok but not for the server settings or perhaps you have a spelling mistake in email address. That's why I said - logon to the TalkTalk webmail account via a browser - if you get access then you know the password is ok.
1. Are you able to logon to the TalkTalk webmail account via a browser? If yes, then all is ok and you know the password.
2. Are you using the correct server settings with no typo mistakes? You need to post that information so we know your current setup. Then we can see what server settings pop/imap etc are being used.

Your post states that this change doesn't occur until October. Could it be that you changed too early? All Thunderbird does is report messages from the email host.
David,
I am not sure that you got my reply but the email from Talk said that it was important that make the changes by 08/10/2022 so I assume that I can do the changes before that date. In trying to do what is required Thunderbird would not let me go any further as I explained in my question above and I cannot do what is asked ie enter a password for aparr17@talktalk.net on mail Talktalk.net then log into server.mail.talktalk.net Any ideas about why I cannot use Thunderbird and what I can do about it? Is it just me or are lots of other people having problems with these changes? Strikes me that Talktalk have made a mess of this and there are only a few days left to get it right.
You may get a better response from talktalk, but if you post a screenshot of your input server panel and your smtp server panel, we may have some suggestions to resolve this.
David,
I have yet to have a better response from Talktalk particularly with the changes they are now introducing. However I have a problem -what are the input/smtp server panels and where/how do I find them? I have used the information about input/smtp etc given in the information for my account in Thunderbird but I do not know whether that is what you want. Also how do I do get and send to you a screenshot which this system can handle?
I am referring to tools>accountsettings>YourAccount>serversettings and tools>accountsettings>Outgoing Server(SMTP)YourAccount (highlight and click 'Edit' to show details)
re :I use Thunderbird and I made what I think are the recommended changes You should be using these settings:
TalkTalk server settings: POP
- Server Name : mail.talktalk.net
- Port: 995
- Connection Security: SSL/TLS
- Authentication Method: Normal Password
IMAP
- Server Name : mail.talktalk.net
- Port: 993
- Connection Security: SSL/TLS
- Authentication Method: Normal Password
SMTP:
- Server Name : smtp.talktalk.net
- Port: 587
- Connection Security: STARTTLS
- Authentication Method: Normal Password
For POP, IMAP and SMTP
- User Name = full email address
- Password = same password you use to access the webmail account.
The password you use in Thunderbird is the same password as you would use to logon to to see your webmail account. I suggest you recheck you have set up all the correct server settings because a dot out of place will mess everything up.
Then you have to check your password, but you cannot do it in Thunderbird. Try to logon to your webmail account via a browser to see if the password is correct. Make sure you do not have the keyboard CapsLock switched on.
If you can logon to the webmail account then you know the password is ok. That is the same password you use in Thunderbird for that same mail account. If you cannot logon to webmail account, then they usually provide a 'forgotten password' link which you use. Follow instructions to get access to webmail. Then reset up password.

Thank you for your detailed response and I am sorry that I have taken so long to reply. 1 Looking at the detail you gave I think that I have used it correctly except that I am not clear if I am using the right Password for POP, IMAP and smtp as you said in the last para about the settings. I find it difficult to know what the differences between all the accounts that seem to appear are. Perhaps you could say what the differences are and how I can be sure I have got to the right account particularly when referring to the .... password you use in Thunderbird is the same as........ use to log on to see your webmail account. I am sure that it is all fairly simple for you having worked with Thunderbird for some time but I do find it somewhat confusing.
2 Are these the only settings needed for the changeover if I am using only Thunderbird and Talktalk and can they all be checked/changed by altering the settings given in T'bird? No other settings to find? Will Mail and the other apps etc. still be available when in Talktalk Mail even if Thunderbird is switched off? It does appear from the letter I received that after the changeover we will still be able to access the Talktalk Email Account with the User name and password to log in at talktalk.co.uk/mail so it is not a clear cut off.
