Immediately after the latest Thunderbird update, I was unable to access the Optonline mail server. I get an error message "Sending of username did not succeed. Mail server mail.optonline.net responded: AUTH CRAM-MD5 not supported." I made no changes to Thunderbird since the last time it was working.

This was fixed by using the following: Recommended POP server mail.optimum.net on 995, SSL/TLS, authentication = normal password
