Using Thunderbird, how can I see items in the BT spam folder as well as Inbox emails?

I receive all emails to my BTinternet address via Thunderbird. (I can also if I make an effort, read them via Firefox). Messages in the Inbox of BT emails correctly come automatically through to my Thunderbird Inbox and download. However messages going to my SPAM folder of BT emails do not get passed through, not even the title. How can I see them in Thunderbird to check for 'Real' messages among the spam?

If the account is POP, only the Inbox is downloaded. An IMAP setup allows you to subscribe to any folder that is visible in BT webmail, including Spam.
