I recently changed my google account/ gmail password. Since then I cannot send gmail via thunderbird. (I can send others hotmail etc) I can receive mail. I can send gmail via the gmail web browser. Sent gmail mail then shows in thunderbird.

I get the following message when sending email in thunderbird: Login to server smtp.googlemail.com with username sjagutpal@gmail.com failed. Enter new password I enter my new password. Fails again.

Sending of the message failed. Unable to authenticate to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.googlemail.com. Please check the password and verify the 'Authentication method' in 'Account Settings | Outgoing server (SMTP)'

note: IMAP server settings is OAuth2.

please help ?

Many Thanks...

Chosen solution

Have you changed the authentication method for the server in the account settings in outgoing server(SMTP) for this outgoing account? I suggest you do. It is separate to the incoming server used for IMAP

You might also want to update the server name from googlemail to gmail as shown here https://autoconfig.thunderbird.net/v1.1/google.com

Fixing Gmail is not my strength, but this may work: - change servers from googlemail to gmail - click settings, then privacy&security - click 'saved passwords' and then 'show passwords' - highlight the rows for the account and delete them. that removes existing passwords - you may need to quit and restart thunderbird and see if you get the google prompt.

Hi,

Thank you David and Matt for your quick replies. It worked !!! :)

Finally found where to change SMTP. In account settings/ left hand list right at the bottom. As suggested changed Server Name: from smtp.googlemail.com to smtp.gmail.com. Also changed, Authentication method: from normal password to OAuth2.

Many Thanks...
