I just tried running Firefox in Safe Mode from the terminal - still crashes. However, I did get this message in the terminal window:

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib64/browser-plugins/nppdf.so wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32 /usr/bin/firefox: line 128: 11320 Segmentation fault $MOZ_PROGRAM "$@"

This clearly has something to do with it! The browser plugin is wrong or corrupted. I will do further research on this message.

Looks like the Adobe Reader plugin is for 32-bit trying to work with 64-bit browser. Not sure why this is affecting the Youtube or Gmail sites, but let me see if I can get rid of the Adobe plugin OR install a 64-bit version.

Nope. Just reinstalled the latest Adobe Reader with plugin and the latest Adobe Flash Player Alpha for 64-bit - still crashes instantly on both YouTube and Gmail.

I'm at my wit's end...

Alright, found a script to completely remove the libflash plugins and install the latest. Running from safe mode, that seems to have fixed it. However, running from regular mode, it still crashes. I disabled the Shockwave plugin and that enables the YouTube page to load, but of course doesn't play any Flash!

Apparently, there is simply no way to get Flash to work with Firefox 3.6.3 on openSUSE Linux 11.0

In addition, Gmail still crashes Firefox completely.

Well, acting on some advice about installing "bleeding-edge" Firefoxes, I installed the absolute latest Adobe Flash plugin 10.1. I downloaded the libflashplayer.so and copied it to the /usr/lib64/browser-plugins folder. That seems to have solved the YouTube AND Gmail crashes!

HOWEVER - it doesn't play YouTube videos - although OPERA can! So Firefox is STILL the lame duck browser here.

One odd thing: the about:plugins report is showing "Shockwave Flash 10.0 r32" - which is NOT 10.1! Why is that? Is there some other place in Firefox where it determines the version of Flash running?

Well, by installing the latest Adobe Flash Player 10.1 beta, the crashes have stopped!

Unfortunately, it also does no play YouTube videos...

So I'm dead in the water. I have no usable Firefox unless I upgrade my entire openSUSE 11.0 to 11.2. Complete disaster.

If it wasn't for the Firefox extensions such as ImageHost Grabber, I would dropkick Firefox in a second and switch to Opera.

What a nightmare.

Actually, I solved the problem by installing the 3.6.4 beta which, with the Adobe Flash 10.1 r32 pre-release of Flash, works to stop the crashes. The YouTube not playing problem apparently required blocking the YouTube cookies, for some bizarre reason - apparently there is a known issue with YouTube frequently refusing to play videos due to some cookie wierdness.

Only problem I have now is Firefox 3.6.4 opens TweetDeck links from the cache rather than going directly to the page, but that's another issue.

I'm running Win XP SP2 (Ver 5.1), Firefox 3.6.10 - YouTube home page instantly crashes Firefox.

Open up computer case, unplug and take out the processor fan cooler and wipe out all the dust, speccially in the heatsink, with a soft little brush and compressed air spray (also check power supply fan). I discovered this solution after weeks of trying all software related recommended steps and nothing worked, adobe flash player was still crashing in firefox, chrome and opera even after completely uninstalling flash and installing latest version 10.2.152.26 of the plugin. I realized this was the problem when pc started to crash unexepectedly when not playing flash videos. So, EUREKA, that did the trick for me. Hope it does for you.

You can go to this site and RIGHT click on the Flash logo (the Red F) Click Settings, then Display Settings. UNcheck the hardware acceleration.

I have spent days looking for an answer. Onthebus was correct in disabling the hardware accelerator option in the flash setting worked. I am running XP with the latest Flash and Firefox. The crash occurred only with Firefox. IE worked perfectly.

YouTube videos started to crash after Firefox updated. Cleared cache, uninstalled and reinstalled flash plugin, no go. Spent a good part of the weekend trying to fix this issue. Onthebus's solution hit the nail on the head :-). I'm running on Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit and Firefox 3.6.15, YouTube videos now play ok.

I went to http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ as advised. "hardware acceleration" was already unchecked.

Youtube crashes any browser I use - Firefox, Safari, Chrome.

It has only started doing that in the last week or so. I can't think what has recently changed.

I have made sure I have the latest copy of Adobe Flash.

Any other suggestions?

I've tried to update all add-ons and such. But I realised that I installed Real Player yesterday. Deactivation of add-ons didn't help, I had to remove Real Player. And now all works fine.
