Any Adobe file that I want to download causes Firefox to open multiple tabs in rapid succession. I can not stop the multiple tabs from opening except by CTRL-ALT-DEL to then manually close Firefox. Even then Firefox immediately re-opens on its own and continues the multiple tabs until I shut the PC down.

What do you have set for the Action for those Adobe file types? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+file+types

Can't be Firefox or you'll have the problem you describe.
