ff will not let me set my own homepage

Now have FF 3.6; this problem happened several upgrades ago. When FF starts, the 'http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6.6/firstrun/' page appears, along with another tap, plus popups stating which homepage I want. I select the correct homepage, but FF does not go there and when set in the Tools section, never stays there.
