Whenever I go into "Private Browsing" and start to type in - www, a history of websites visited comes up. I thought that in Private Browsing, history was not retained!

New history is not kept, but existing history from normal mode is still there and can be accessed if you are in Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode.

If you want to prevent that then you need to clear the history after you enter Private Browsing mode.
