Tools Advanced setting is on auto spell check but has not worked for months - yes it had worked, probably for years. Looking at gmail for an auto spell checker I see that it leaves that to one's browser - Firefox.

Your More system details list doesn't show the en-GB dictionary.

If you do not have the en-US locale then check that you have a dictionary installed (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and selected.

You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
Also make sure that [X]"Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick.
You can also try to toggle the "Check Spelling" item off and on again.

Many Thanks. Obviously I didn't notice loosing my dictionary in some update, comes of speaking English!! (Probably something to being in a time zone 8 hours earlier than something called PST which mysteriously is inserted in the symbol shown above my tag.) On installing the GB dictionary I needed to restart Firefox which then wouldn't run. The MS help didn't, so I restarted Win7 which seems to have fixed things. For a moment I thought I needed to look for Exploder so's to get online.
