not saving preferences
my daughter did a hard reboot of the computer, and ever since, every time we open firefox, it loses all our preference settings and opens 7 tabs for all our plug-ins...

there is no prefs.js file listed in my profile folder, and i am unable to upload the screen prints of both what firefox looks like when i open it each time, as well as my folder contents. i guess i'll try "safe mode" but i'd really like to know why this has happened... i updated firefox last week to the latest version, is anyone else reporting any similar problems?
i also have a crash report from 15:12 EST today 1/31/2011 Crash ID: bp-bc402874-7a94-44f5-af1b-991952110131
Make sure that you look in the correct location for the Firefox Profile Folder

Windows will probably hide the .js file extension of the file prefs.js
"Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders, use %APPDATA% in the File name field
Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > "View" tab > under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck the box "Hide extensions for known file types" to see the file extensions of all files.
- Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
- XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
- Vista/Windows 7: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
ok found it, could not delete says "could not delete prefs: file is corrupted and unreadable" and there is no prefs.js.moztmp file. opened in safe mode, yet "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" to rebuild the prefs.js file from program defaults, the same as if you manually deleted the file.) All preferences will be reset to default values but future changes will be saved." did not change anything once i reopened it. just opened firefox home page and welcome page...
i also unhid the profile extension, checked it's options, and neither box under attributes were checked...
You can do a disk check with the chkdsk.exe program.
If you run the chkdsk.exe program from a cmd.exe Command window then you can read the response from the chkdsk.exe program.
Open a cmd.exe window:
Start > Run: cmd.exe <press Enter>
At the command prompt (>) type or Copy&Paste: chkdsk.exe /f /r <press Enter> (put a space before /f and /r)
If you get something like: Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? y/n then answer the question with "Y" and close all programs and reboot the computer.
My problem exactly - I get the same message when trying to delete the prefs file. File is corrupt and cannot be deleted. Any solution?
