when updating event listings on www.wexlive.com with firefox € symbols get replaced, in some but not all instances, with other nonsense symbols. I have taken to updating the site with another browser for now.

You are using Unicode symbols on pages that are send as Western ISO-8859-1, if symbols were copied incorrectly to Unicode presentation then you may see the 8 bit presentation of those Unicode symbols (€: €). You can also use the HTML entity code: € -> €

I just went into View - Character Encoding - Auto-detect. I think that has sorted it. Thanks again for the response.

If you want to be sure that Unicode isn't causing problems then you have to make sure that the text editor is in Unicode mode when you edit the file. If the file is Unicode then you should also configure the server to send it as such.
If you reopen a file in the editor in Western code then you get the wrong encoding.
As I wrote above, if you use € instead of the € symbol then it should always work: €8 -> €8
