While following the steps in the forum article titled "Importing favorites and other data from Internet Explorer" after completing step 3 select which items to import, whether I select all option or just Favorites, I get the same error "Firefox has stopped working... close program."

I am importing from IE 8 on a Win7 OS laptop. I have tried the import everytime and can't get past this error. I did an export from IE8 which is in the form of a html file which apparently there is no option in Firefox to use.

Thank you both the-edmeister and Gryllida both of your reply answers came in within two minutes of each other and were identical. I did as you both instructed and the exported html document from IE8 got imported without problem.

Followup questions:

I have a need to use both IE and Firefox due to specific website exclusive compatibility of each.

Question 1 - If I add additional favorites in IE8, export to html again then follow you instructions again, will it generate duplicate entries in Firefox or simply overwrite and add new entries?

Question 2 - Upon installing Firefox, part of the process is installing files from IE8 when I expereinced the first time the error I listed. Then tried the attempts manually serveral times, always with the same result - Firebox stopped then closed. Is there a known issue that has been unresolved with the latest version of Firefox and possibly other earlier versions in not being able to import native file format of IE8? If yes, then there should be something posted in the document I referred to earlier here within Firefox Help.

Thanks again for you help....it is much appreciated.

1) Firefox will once again add all bookmarks that are saved in an HTML file if you import such a file.
You can look at the CheckPlaces extension to remove duplicate bookmarks.

2) If you have problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the Favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.

  • Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html): File > Import and Export
  • Import the HTML file in Firefox: Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML: From File
