I use a paid for security suite, but I note you use Windows XP, if that is a genuine version presumably you qualify for free use of MicroSoft Security Essentials. [ http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ ]

Firefox should work with whatever you install, the subject of security is discussed widely on the Internet, and there are a few help articles relating to firefox and specific applications.
