Besides crashing rather too often, Firefox 4.0 seems to have made my dual-core + 2 GB machine very slow despite regular registry cleaning, regular defragmentation, regular cleaning unwanted files, cookies, etc., and keeping machine free of virus, malware, spyware and all sorts of undesirable things

If 700,000k is making your system slow then you should consider closing tabs and windows. Especially close any Java, Flash, or Quicktime based page as those eat memory like Professor Nutty's family. Also stating the processor and graphics card in your system could help to understand why your having issues.
