Everytime I search from the google box, the google page that opens only fills the left third of the screen. The links open a normal webpage. How can I ensure a normal webpage is opened from the google box on firefox?

I have tried searching using the other search engines and this problem seems unique to google on firefox.

Do you mean that you get the results in the sidebar at the left end of the screen?

Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems: View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl+0 (zero); Cmd+0 on Mac)

Thanks for this cor-el but I tried your suggestion after making my initial search on 'Firefox help' where someone else suggested this. I have had another look at the problem and it seems to be related to the add-on web search tool 'Deeper Web'. I have uninstalled it and the problem has resolved but if anyone out there knows how to correct it I would happily re-install the add-on.
