I broke my laptop (long story) but the hard drive was safe. I bought a new laptop and I'm currently using the old hard drive as an external drive. I haven't exported any personal information (bookmarks and stored passwords) from the previous Firefox 4 installation. How can I import them into my new version of Firefox?

You can recover the data from your Profile. See this article which explains what your Profile contains: Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.

And this article which explains how to move the data to your new one: Managing Profiles
