Firefox 4 change the way that works, now you restore through the History Menu then choose "Restore Previous session". More information initem 31 (#tabslost)
You can make Firefox 4.0.1 look like Firefox 3.6.17, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 look like 3.6)
but
does switching to firefox 4 let me bring back my tabs that i just lost
or are they basically gone forever
this is a thing that i need to know

You probably lost that session if you closed that window. If you had used one of the other methods then Firefox would have created a backup copy. Firefox 4 will always create a backup copy, but Firefox 3.6 versions do not do that.
You can check the history to see if you can reconstruct them.
If you had crashes before then you can check the files in the Firefox Profile Folder to see if there is a file sessionstore.bak
If you find it and it is of a recent date then make a backup copy elsewhere and rename the file to sessionstore.js to see if that brings back some of the missing tabs.
