add-ons manager simply doesn't load, except for a page with four tiny-font menu items on the left, and a tiny box with illegible label (due to miniscule font) dead center (probably says something like "loading").

In the Add-ons Manager, "Get Add-ons" is selected by default and tries to access addons.mozilla.org so it may show "Loading" for an extended period. Try clicking on Extensions, Appearance, or Plugins in the left panel.

"clicking on Extensions, Appearance, or Plugins in the left panel" is precisely the problem. Nothing works for any of the left panel tabs..................
