firefox says it must disable my Avast protection to update firefox 5.0.1

more options

When updates to my firefox 5.0.1 are offered for download, firefox tells me the updates are not compatible with my Avast protection, and that if I proceed to download the firefox update, Avast will be disabled.

It makes more sense to me to keep my old version of firefox and have my Avast protection in place, than to have the latest update of firefox, but no Avast protection.

The only thing that would be disabled is an Avast add-on for Firefox, not the entire Avast program. Check with Avast to see if they have an update for that Firefox add-on, which is compatible with Firefox 6.0.
