My bookmarks keep disappearing at random, and will also disappear every time I try to organize them into folders. How can I fix this?

more options

I use Firefox 3.6.20 on a Macbook. Almost every bookmark I attempt to save will disappear immediately after doing do. Also, when I'm trying to organize my bookmarks into folders, doing so often makes the bookmarks disappear as well, rather than placing them in the selected folder. The action of dropping them in a folder will either multiply the bookmark into three bookmarks, or make it go away completely. How can I fix this?

Chosen solution

The Views menu in the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) is for displaying the bookmarks in different sorting orders (hence the name Views) and doesn't sort bookmarks permanently.

In Firefox the option to sort bookmarks is only available for folders and not for individual bookmarks.
Easiest to sort by name is to do that in the left pane of the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) and right-click the folder that you want to sort.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Is there any way to fix that file or download a version of Firefox that doesn't have that problem? I can't download the newest version because my Mac is only a 10.4.

Did you try to delete the file places.sqlite in the Firefox Profile Folder?

A problem with a corrupted file places.sqlite can cause problems like you described and if you delete that file then Firefox will create a new version and use the JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder to restore the bookmarks.

Just found and deleted it, I'll keep you posted. Thanks a bunch!

Hold on, does Firefox create the new version and restore the bookmarks automatically? Because now it looks like all my bookmarks are blank, they lead to nothing.

You did close Firefox via Firefox > Quit Firefox before removing the file?

Remove the other places files mentioned here as well and try again:

You may have to remove the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups floder to make Firefox use the previous backup.

Cool, that part seems to be taken care of and thank you for helping me! But I still have my other problem, which is that when I try to sort my bookmarks into folders, it won't really let me. I'll drop a bookmark into the folder I want it and it won't go in at all. Instead it will stay in the main folder and multiply into two bookmarks. Is there a way to fix that as well?
