Everytime I press a bookmark, it opens in same tab. I would like each bookmark to open in a new tab.

You can middle-click a bookmarks to open the bookmark in a new tab just like you can with other links.

What's odd is that FF used to do this automatically. Then a while ago it changed. I know about the right-click trick...but why did it change? Part of a new version?

Opening a bookmark in the current tab is the default behavior. If it was different in the past then you had an extension installed that had changed that behavior.
