Back button is only back and forward. It use to be you could drop down and choose where you were 4 x ago or 10 x ago. I used that feature alot and miss it! Please put it back!
The convenience of the back button and forward button is great but not too long ago you could also choose a dropdown that showed your last 20 pages. I used that alot and would like that option back.

I believe it was and is 15 pages, but if you separate and replace one in the middle some of the earlier ones are still there.
Right click on the arrows and see the history again older on the bottom, newer keeps piling on at the top. If you have a Mac background with single button mouse they threw in a hold the left button down for a second to bring up the context menu. This is described in item #5 of the first ten steps in the following.
You can make Firefox 6.0.2 look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6). Whether or not you make changes, you should be aware of what has changed and what you have to do to use changed or missing features.
There is a lot more beyond those first 10 steps listed, if you want to make Firefox more functional.
Please mark "Solved" one answer that will best help others with a similar problem -- hope this was it.
Modified
The arrow to open the tab history of the Back and Forward buttons has been removed in Firefox 4 and later.
Use one of these methods to open the tab history list:
- Right click on the Back or Forward button
- Hold down the left mouse button on the enabled Back or Forward button until the list opens
You can look at this extension:
