Chosen solution

Unfortunately, the search box on the new (Firefox 4+) home page doesn't have Google magic built into it. You might need to make Google your home page instead.

Is the problem in the Google toolbar, or in the Firefox search box (with the Google search plugin)?

I'm not sure what you mean by type ahead, but in the Firefox search box: if you right-click the blank area, is Show Suggestions checked?

I have the standard (default) FF home page. It shows the picture of the fox and below it is the Google search box. It used to be that when I started typing something in the search box, it would display a list of items, like it was trying to guess what I was going to search on. Now it no longer does that. Thank you! That was the problem. Once I switched my home page to Google, it now works like I expected it to . Thanks again.
