It's at the point where I downgraded to Firefox 7.0.1. Any time I try to post or make an edit to a post using Blackboard, Firefox crashes. Repeatedly. Sometimes so often that I cannot close the problem tab before it crashes again. As best as I can tell this is an issue with Java and FF8.

See this Blackboard KB page to see which version of Firefox is certified for the version of Blackboard Learning System Vista or CE used at your school.

Looks like the newest version of Firefox that is Certified as being compatible with any version of Blackboard software is the Firefox 3.6 versions.
