Unable to use Edit to cut and paste as it is greyed out in new Tab for Firefox top left corner window?

Since updating Firefox as instructed, can no longer use Edit to cut and paste etc. Need to be able to especially from my Son's emails!

Chosen solution

The Edit text is always grayed, but the three buttons next to it should become enabled if there is something to do like Copy if text is selected.
You can hover the arrow at the right to get a menu with Cut, Copy, and Paste.

I too am having the paste greyed out problem with firefox 8.
