After connecting to the internet, I open Fire fox homepage then type in something I want to search for in the box or bar and the results show up briefly on screen but disappear like the page is whited out but the results are faintly visible behind and unable to be selected. This has only been occurring for a few days so is a recent development. I am unable to browse at the moment even the plugin check won't work.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
