I now have to use Ctrl W to go back effectively when more than one site is involved. I cannot understand why Firefox developers took away our ability to just click back with the mouse as much as we want. I had been given some advice previously but it did not work to solve this new problem. My suggestion: Restore our ability to go back as much as we want by using the back arrow.

Are you referring to the Back and Forward toolbar button that no longer have the button to open the tab history in Firefox 4+ versions?

The arrow to open the tab history of the Back and Forward buttons has been removed in Firefox 4 and later.
Use one of these methods to open the tab history list:

  • Right click on the Back or Forward button
  • Hold down the left mouse button on the enabled Back or Forward button until the list opens
