About box shows 'apply update' message. When I press it, FF restarts but nothing has updated and the 'apply update' message is still there.

I understand that you are much beyond FF8 now, how do I get back on track?

Um... It appears I am in the same situation with Thunderbird, stuck on Tbird 8.

I am in the release channel for Tbird. Last update on 3 October 2011

I have downloaded and installed FF11 beta. All seems well. Does not explain the FF8 auto update failure. Nor the Tbird auto update failure.

I did the FF11 install on admin account, but everyday work is on 'normal' user account. I seldom log in to admin. Is this an impediment to auto update?

thank you cor-el. I have already installed ff11 beta and it is working so far.

That does not explain the problem with auto update and does not tell me if auto update will will now be functioning properly.
