When at the Google home page I start to type a search and it proceeds to a results page before I even finish typing what I'm looking for. How do I disable this and remain on the google home page until I press enter?

That is Google's new instant search Feature. It isn't anything Firefox changed, but simply new features that Google is rolling out. Visit http://www.google.com/insidesearch/instant-about.html, which explains it and how to turn it off.

On a side note, please update your Firefox to version 11, the version you are running has several known security issues and bugs that are fixed in the newer version.
