When Firefox opens the search box on the main page displays for just a flash, then disappears. When I type in a request, no text appears, but Google instant search shows drop down suggestions, and my requests are usually searched for properly. I am running FF 11.0 on an XP, and have updated my video drivers.

Hi,

Please check if this happens in Safe Mode.

Problematic Extensions

Troubleshooting Extensions and Themes

Uninstalling Add-ons

Uninstalling Toolbars

Safe mode disables the installed Extensions, and themes (Appearance) in Tools (Alt + T) > Add-ons. Hardware acceleration is also temporarily disabled - the manual setting is Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Use hardware acceleration when available. Options > Advanced. All these settings/add-ons can also be individually or collectively disabled/enabled/changed in Firefox normal mode to check if an extension, theme or hardware acceleration is causing issues.

Are you talking about the about:home page?

Reset the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone pref via the right-click context menu to the default on the about:config page and close and restart Firefox to restore the about:home page to its default.

  • Open the about:config page via the location bar
  • Type in the Filter bar: mstone
  • Right-click the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone line and select: Reset
  • Close and restart Firefox

If that didn't help then delete the delete the chromeappsstore.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder and repeat the above.

Thank you for your help. I am not that quick about this stuff. Below is the home page that I am currently using. I have done nothing recently to change this.

The only thing I'm noticing that looks different to me is that the search bar design now appears larger and has the Google logo positioned above the actual search bar.

The www.google.com/firefox site is the site that older Firefox 3 versions used as the home page.
Current Firefox versions use a build-in home about:home page that doesn't require internet access.

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"

Thank you for your help. I don't really care for the layout of new home page - looks too much like Google's - but I can live with it. And it has a Fox on it!

Thanks again, Chris

On the other hand, I just noticed the top shortcut buttons are missing from this about:home page. Images, News, Videos, etc. There must be a way to import or set up these Google buttons ? VERY handy.

I found this add-on. Not the same thing but not bad.
