On my system, there are multiple sound devices, only one of which works for playback - Alsa hw:1,0. In applications which allow me to choose an audio device, that works. But Firefox apparently has no sound config. For the Totem media player, which also has no config, I can use gnome-sound-properties to set the default playback device. However, that does not work for Firefox.
