If I open a new tab I cannot input any address to any site. Well I can input it, just when I hit return the typed page address disappears and it returns to "Go to a website". Nothing happens. I can use the search field (google) or a bookmark to open a new tab. This resulting tab will then accept input and go to the address I type. The new tab will not do anything.

Chosen solution

Try to open a new window (File > New Window) to see if that works.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

This can also be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

You can also try to repair the places database with this extension:
