Not a plug-in problem. Firefox problem. Firefox won't tell me which plug-ins need updating. Also I cannot download anything. Download box doesn't appear.

Tried to download a firewall. Note said my plug-in was outdated (did not say which plug-in). Went to tools/plugins & it told me 'java' plug-in was outdated. Un-installed old Java & downloaded most recent java plug-in. It did download. However, download box refused to appear, so I couldn't install Java. Re-installed Firefox via Internet Explorer. Same problems appeared on new version Firefox. Now I can't either update plug-ins or download anything. RUNNING: Windows XP, Service Pack 3, Firefox 14.0.1.

Plugins are used from the Operating System, but Firefox often attempts to show them and to check them.

  1. First of all use the firefox menu to ensure your plugins are all enabled.
  2. then use /plugincheck
that will sometimes show an old Java as disabled for safety reasons, but then includes an update link
note the page scrolls and provides general information and further instructions

Presumably you already have a firewall and other security software, you may need to check whether they block downloads or updates.
