Why ever since updating to version 17.0.1, Firefox crashes everytime upon closing?

more options

Whenever I am done surfing the web and I click to close Firefox, the Crash Reporter launches stating it has crashed. This is not a random thing, it happens every time and it only started after the last update to version 17.0.1

There are many possible reasons, from a not-completely-compatible add-on to a corrupted settings file...

Does it matter how many tabs you have open or what sites they are?

Could you do the test described in this article: to browse a bit in Firefox's Safe Mode and see whether you still have the same problem exiting Firefox: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-crashes-troubleshoot-prevent-and-get-help#w_check-to-see-if-the-crash-happens-in-safe-mode

For a minute there I thought that turning off the Hardware Acceleration fixed the issue, I open and closed Firefox several times without issue. However when I came here and selected a solution and then closed Firefox, it once again crashed. And to answer the question whether it matters how many tabs I have open, then answer is No.

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more crash reports that have this format:

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page.

  • You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website.

If you can't open Firefox then see:

I'm getting the same problem intermittently, in Firefox 17.0.1 for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0 .

Does nobody read these things?

Hi flministock2,

Your earliest ID is related to plugins, but it's not clear from the report which one was at fault in that particular case. 4502b0a1-1607-41c8-acf3-54c532120818. Have you noticed any pattern involving pages having Adobe Acrobat or other plugins open when you exit Firefox?

I checked several of the other crash IDs and couldn't make much of the reports. Someone more expert and reading them will need to help with the interpretation.

Hi patrickgantz, are your crashes also at shutdown? If not, what pattern(s) have you observed?

The crash reports go into a large database and one or more people look for patterns, but no one replies to them directly.

Your crash IDs seem to be associated with a range of different issues, different between the Fx16 and Fx17 reports.

Have you already tested whether Firefox runs correct in Safe Mode? Please see the link further up this thread.

Hi brashley46,

Your latest 3 crash IDs focus on the Nvidia 3D drivers, while the 4th refers to Flash. Could you disable Firefox's use of hardware accelerated graphics here:

Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General

You usually need to restart Firefox before that takes effect.

thanks, jscher2000, will try that.

I've had just one erroneous crash report since disabling hardware-accelerated graphics: bp-3ae46ea1-b74e-4be8-9f41-99d9a2121218 It was still annoying.

jscher2000, thank you for the suggestion but I have already tried disabling Hardware Acceleration which did not fix my problem. I'm thinking about reverting back to previous version as I did not have issue then and nothing else has changed.

more options

Hi flministock2, sorry for the cross-talk in this thread, the suggestion about hardware acceleration was for someone else's list of crash IDs.

As I noted in my comments on yours, there seems to be something plugin-related going on, but I can't tell what it is, sorry. Have you tried disabling all nonessential plugins (basically Flash is essential, but the others, I have my doubts) to see whether that makes any difference?

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Add-ons > Plugins category

Hi brashley46

You are using WebGL with the Nouveau 3D driver.

You will have to uninstall the Nouveau 3D driver as that driver is causing the crashes and you use them at your own risk as they are not quite finished yet.

You can also check the Graphics section on the Help > Troubleshooting Information page.

My issue is that whenever I shut down 17.0.1 it claims to crash. Tabs, addons/extensions...nothing matters. It's continually prompting me to reset. I've tried fresh installs, going back to an earlier version--nothing helps. I never get a crash report, just an error popup. How do I fix this? It's driving me up the wall!

more options

Did you try to disable all plugins in addition to using a clean profile?

Try to delete the crash reports folder (\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports) to see if that makes Firefox send a crash report.

Also check if sending crash reports is enabled.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General: System Defaults: "Submit crash reports"
more options

I uninstalled, did a complete wipe, then reinstalled...no plugins or anything that I saw. Still, it falls down, goes boom. Crash reporting is on and I've also activated performance reporting...just in case.

Which pop-up do you get?

Is that when you close Firefox or after restarting?

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Ok, I finally fixed my issue with Firefox crashing every time I exited the program. This has been happening every since version 16 and I'm now at version 18. My problem was being caused by the add-on "Keyscrambler Personal". I have used this extension for a very long time w/o issue but for some reason it is now a problem. I have sent the information to QFX Software and hopefully they will be able to fix the problem!
