Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Thank-you for your response. I did try to watch the symptoms closely and well none of the symptoms matched either of the problems solution you mentioned. None of them showed sqlite corruption nor write protected bookmark although i did get a a hint to solve this issue myself though. Since I was able to freely delete and edit bookmarks , I deleted all my bookmarks over all my devices and then used one of devices to restore the bookmarks to a date just before the error occurred and then re-synced it . This has solved the problem for me, at least for know. Thanks to you because in your first link the solution of recreating he bookmarks file was quite helpful.

I am afraid the problem is still there.Although the bookmarks have been restored but again they have started multiplying over and over again. please kindly help me stop them from spreading to all my devices .They just keep on replicating .

This sounds like a problem with sync.

You may need to delete places.sqlite on all affected computer.
Be sure to first unlink all devices until you've finished doing this.

I did as you said.Everything gets back to normal for sometime but when i restart the system and open Firefox , it starts multiplying again.

More importantly I too think its the sync problem , after deleting the file and establishing sync again, its starts again.

I have the same problem.

Tried all the same steps, still have the issues.

I am pretty sure it is caused by Firefox and Sync not being able to handle bookmarks when the overall file size gets above 30k or so.

Sync always performs well until my bookmark file size gets beyond 30k or so. Once you pass 30k all kinds of funkyness starts to appear, and eventually this multiplication cancer develops.

Weed your bookmarks down to less than 30k and things should be copacetic again.

Well , ill try to trim down the bookmarks size but most of them are too important , I don't know if I could remove a significant amount. unfortunately I had to switch to chrome for now .
